Band Cornetist Plays with Fodens

by Stephen Murray

On February 4th 2006 Drogheda Brass Band principal cornet Stephen Murray got the chance of a lifetime when he got to play a solo with The Fodens Richardson Band from Manchester. The band had made the trip over to Armagh, which has now become an annual trip to play two nights in the Market Place Theatre.

Saturday saw the band host a young soloist concert where soloist below the age of 25 got to play a solo with the band. A field of 12 took to the stage including Stephen and it was an enjoyable afternoon of music.

Stephen - who is currently studying a BA(Hons) in applied music - opened the second half. He played "Carrickfergus", arranged by Alan Fernie. Some friends from Drogheda who had made the trip commented that he played really well especially considering the very intimidating band who were accompanying him. Stephen afterwards that:

I'm really happy with how it went and would like to thank Ivor Stephenson for giving me this opportunity to play with this fantastic band and also to thank everyone who came and supported me.
We rounded off a great day by seeing Fodens in concert that night.
