2000 Annual General Meeting

by Trevor Johnston

The Drogheda Brass Band's annual general meeting was held on Monday, 27th March 2000, where the committee for the new year was sworn in.

This year saw a few new faces to the committee, with a few remaining at their posts. Firstly, Tony Collins has remained as president. Tony has done an excellent job for the past five years and agreed to stay on for just one more term. Christy Smith has also kept his job as band treasurer for the next twelve months. Willing also to remain were band secretary Michael Plunkett and band sergeant Brian Murphy, who have been very successful in their jobs over the past year.

Several people opted not to go for re-election, leading to several new faces on the committee. Most noticeable was Stephen Smith's stepping down from vice-president. Stephen has served in this position for the past number of years and saw it time to allow someone else into these shoes. Taking over as new vice-president is Tony Flood. As for assistant secretary, Trevor Johnston declined to continue, having been elected to the position last year. Resigning their committee memberships was newcomer Neil Kierans and Brian Murphy, who has served in several important positions for several years now, also opted not to go forward.

New blood was thus required - and new blood was found. Filling the assistant secretary's position is baritone player Owen Donnelly. Into the three committee member spaces enter fellow-baritone player Barry Conlan, and cornetists Emma Hearty and Maria Burns. All four are the "new wave" of band members and are sure to keep the organisation vibrant and thriving.

It appears that the Drogheda Brass Band has chosen for itself a capable bunch of people to guide it into the new millennium. The band has never been in a better way than it is now and this is, of course, due in no small part to our committees and ex-committees. This year's is sure to follow in their footsteps.
