Sports Capital Grant
by Brian Murphy
The Drogheda Brass Band committee were delighted with the recent announcement of a £7,000 Sports Capital Programme grant announced by the Minister for Tourism, Dr. Jim McDaid. There was a total of 400 local community based programmes who benefited from the £14 million grants scheme.
This is the second tranche of funding being allocated under the new National Lottery funded Programme which was announced at the end of 1998 following a comprehensive review. The complete list of Drogheda-based projects to benefit from these grants are:
| Club | Amount |
|---|---|
| Drogheda Sub-Aqua Club | £10,000 |
| Drogheda Brass Band | £7,000 |
| Seapoint Pitch and Putt Club | £2,000 |
| St. Paul's Table Tennis Club | £1,000 |
Dr. McDaid said,
"The total of £16 million allocated this year represents a £10 million increase over the last year. It is well more than double last year's funding and when all outstanding further allocations are made it will amount to a threefold increase."
The projects were selected following an examination and assessment of all the applications received in accordance with the assessment criteria and terms and conditions of the new programme.
Our premises in George's Street, Drogheda, home now to the Drogheda Brass Band for nearly a century.
As a result of the Summer Sounds week and the summer holidays the committee of Drogheda Brass Band have not yet had a chance to discuss the grant. It was as a result of some hard work from chairman Tony Collins early in 1999 that the band applied for the grant with the aim of upgrading the facilities at their George's Street headquarters.
